The Illustra object-relational database management system (ORDBMS)extends the widely accepted relational database model, enabling users tostore, manage and analyze complex data such as audio, video and images ina single database with traditional text and numbers, using industry-standard SQL.Illustra represents the commercialization of the seven yearPOSTGRES research project of the University of California Berkeley, oneof the most advanced database research projects ever undertaken. Theextensible Illustra database system allows users to define an unlimitednumber of new data types, while also providing the services expected of acommercial-quality relational database. In addition to a full set ofdata types and functions, Illustra features modular ``datablades' thatextend the capabilities of the database. Text, Spatial, Time Series, andImage DataBlades are the first of many that will comprise a full range ofindustry-specific products created by Illustra, third-parties and users.
